The only way you will get an IMAP experience with Hotmail (now that Microsoft has terminated WebDav access) is to use the Windows Live Mail client. With that email client Microsoft allows their newer proprietary DeltaSync access which provides the IMAP type experience. You cannot have IMAP for Hotmail with Thunderbird as the mail client.
