Ahh I see the problem. You are downloading and installing the files into Firefox not Thunderbird. You need to right on the file you want and use the save as link in Firefox and download the file then Open it with Thunderbird Add-on install section. For some reason Firefox wants to autodownload and install the xpi's into itself. Nice feature for those xpi's that belong in Firefox but is annoying otherwise.
Just an explanation of the problem so that it make a little more sense.
