Can you please check and make sure that in Thunderbird the security settings for your Hotmail account are set to:
None Password transmitted insecurely Since you are talking to a (localhost = the Hotmail add-on) server totally inside your computer no other security settings are needed or supported. Selection of other settings can be a reason leading to the results you are seeing.
