VT I assume you are in Vermont. I am in Connecticut and it works with a free Yahoo account.
I think Yahoo used to offer POP worldwide except in the US and it now seems to work fine.
Here is the link with the setup instructions for Thunderbird 3.

http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/yahoomail/mailplus/pop/pop-51.html

Here is step 5 from the instructions but use the link so you can set it up properly. Note: The highlighted underlined text of the two different pop servers one is for free accounts and the other is for paid "plus" accounts.

5. On the Server Settings page:
  • Change the Server Name to "pop.mail.yahoo.com" or "plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com" (depending on your account type).
  • If you want to leave your mail on the server after you have downloaded it, deselect the Use Global Inbox (store mail in Local Folders) checkbox. To merge your Yahoo! Mail on your computer with mail from other accounts, select this checkbox.
  • Make sure the Incoming User Name is your Yahoo! ID (your email address without the "@yahoo.com").
Good luck

It does NOT work here. I get an error message, "Pop not allowed for
user" on all of my accounts.

Yahoo POP3 is available for Yahoo United States FREE users.
Webmail extension is not needed and I disabled it.
In Thunderbird version 3  the server settings are:
POP Server: pop.mail.yahoo.com
Port: 110
Connection Security: None
Authentication method: Password, transmitted insecurely
Outgoing SMTP server is: smtp.yahoo.com on Port 587
I do not use yahoo to send mail so I have not confirmed the outgoing server settings.

If my memory is correct it is posted at the Yahoo Site that pop3 is only available to paid users.
