Update - I have solved the problem of not being able to send in Gmail.
I run Yahoo and Gmail accounts on the same thunderbird, and I needed to
define another SMTP server for gmail, because the localhost server that
was already define of course had the details for Yahoo. I needed a
second one with the gmail server defined. I am still having problems
with the gmail extension needing to be reinstalled often.
