I have exactly the same problem: The extension just disappears every
other Thunderbird restart.
I run Gmail extension 0.7.0 on Webmail 1.4.1 on Thunderbird 5.0 on Gnome
2.30.2 on Ubuntu Desktop 32-bit 10.04 (LTS).

Update - I have solved the problem of not being able to send in Gmail.
I run Yahoo and Gmail accounts on the same thunderbird, and I needed to
define another SMTP server for gmail, because the localhost server that
was already define of course had the details for Yahoo. I needed a
second one with the gmail server defined. I am still having problems
with the gmail extension needing to be reinstalled often.
