As this message did not show up in Google Groups, I thought it had 'evaporated', so I have only just checked and seen your comment.
Immediately after posting (and having Hotmail in "keep me logged in" mode for a few days) it all suddenly just worked - but see the next bit. HOWEVER... in checking what version of TB I was running it auto updated and so I am now on TB8.0 so that may have been the thing that helped.
