Simply wrap date in the respective wiki markup (two single quotes):
'(index < 5) ? "* ''" +
tiddler.modified.formatString("DD MMM YY") +
"''→ [[" +
...
If that doesn't work, it'd be useful to see this in context; could you
upload a demo somewhere?
