If you just want to "protect" a single term, wrap it in the "tic" symbol 
(upper right hand on keyboard), which can be applied with the monospace AB 
button inside the tiddler editor.

If you have a whole block you want to "protect", you can wrap the text in 
triple tic quotes:

```
this is my toc macro: <<toc root>>
```
which can be done by selecting your text and clicking on the monospaced 
block formatting icon ()  inside the tiddler editor.
