In addition to Marks reply, I use them all the time.

On My Keyboard the "tic" or left quote, is the left most, the key before 1
 and unshifted ~ tilde 

Also see the Codeblock widget https://tiddlywiki.com/#CodeBlockWidget and 
the html equivalents.

The View widget in format=text is another option

Whole tiddlers can be set in text with type = plain text
