I think the information is there but spread out in several places, like "macros in wikitext" and "widget attributes". So it can be difficult to grasp unless you read the documentation thoroughly. This topic comes up often enough that it deserves a more accessible explanation where we pull together all the details in one place, so that it can serve as a one-stop reference for macros/variables.
