First let me say thank you for being interested and helping with coloring
references. I
Some more ideas according the other toolbar elements would be fine

Here are some more ideas of references;
1) the tool tip displays number of references if tiddler has them, or if it
has references, mouse over could pop up the list
2) If there are a lot of references, open them in another tiddler above the
current tiddler. This tiddler('FooBar') could be a FND tagsPlorer tiddler,
with a title like 'References to FooBar on dd mm yyyy', in other words a
tiddler recording the references on that date. If desired, this tiddler
could be saved.
3) A CSS change to 'references' does not have to the the indicator that the
tiddler has references. The color of the tiddler border could change
according to how linked to it is. Maybe the top border color? There could
be a sound when a tiddler with references is rendered. (During my siesta
today, my tiddlers had musical identities generated by how referenced they
were - a TW could have a musical aspect, or a sound relating to their
'weight': eg heavy knock sound for tiddler with lot of refs, a light snap
for on with few links (i've been thinking about making a Xylophone for my
daughter, wires got crossed in my reverie))
