This sounds like an issue that you may be able to resolve by tweaking the settings when you print. What printer are you using?
I recommend following HansBKK's advice if tweaking the print settings is not an option: print to an image format that you can tweak and then print the tweaked image to your printer. Your printer may also have more (or just different) options for printing images than for printing html documents. I am not sure if Firefox 3.6 handles printing differently than Firefox 9, but in Firefox 9 with a Canon MP640, I can print a webpage as Normal-size, Borderless, Fit-To-Page, and Scaled (and a few other options that are not applicable here).
