It's other apps too, I'm afraid. However, FF is by far and away the
major one I have running, with several tabs open at all times. I'll try
what you suggest and report back.

It sounds like Firefox is getting confused under lengthy or heavy usage of
graphics. It may be worth experimenting with turning off some Firefox
flags, including hardware acceleration:
