Found it.

There seems to be an incompatibility between the Firefox20 - Ubuntu version 
(They are very slow with official updates) and Tiddlyfox 1.0alpha17;
Removed it and installed (the older version) Tiddlyfox 1.0alpha3. In 
Add-ons disabled automatic upgrades.

A quick test seems to indicate this solved the problem.

I would still like some thoughts from people who know more about this stuff.
