Firstly, of course, it's a bug that mistyped wikitext can cause JavaScript errors. There are some that I know about: for instance, the filter parser throws errors when it encounters a syntax error. Secondly, when an error does happen, it needs to be possible for the user to recover, and as you've discovered that is currently often quite difficult. The plan is to have a "safe mode", like classic TW, that disables all customisations and plugins. I've updated the roadmap.
