Jeremy,

Safari is 5.1.10
TW is 5.0.6-beta

So, if the problem is afari, how can I upgrade without upgrading my OS? I need to stay with 10.6.8 as we use iMovie6 all the time which won't run on mavericks (and no, we can't upgrade iMovie as later versions do not support iMovie projects on a project by project basis, only using their stupid event structure).

Hi Bob

The browser is the latest safari on os x, 10.6.8, which does
    support html5.

What is the version number reported by the "About" menu in Safari? I think the problem is that OS X 10.6.x (Snow Leopard) is now pretty old (5 years old to be precise), and doesn't get the latest updates of Safari.

According to this site, the first version of Safari to support the FileReader was 6.1, which I seem to remember came with OS X Lion:

http://caniuse.com/#feat=filereader

As to version of TW, I am not sure how to tell that from my file.

Click the control panel icon in the sidebar; the TiddlyWiki version number is listed at on the first tab under Info/Basics.

Best wishes

Jeremy

Did you try to drag a TWclassic file there? ... it won't
work. It's for upgrading TW5 versions.

You *can* drop a TWClassic file onto the tiddlywiki.com/upgrade
<http://tiddlywiki.com/upgrade> function (or any other TW5
document)... and it imports the tiddlers from the dropped TWC
into the new TW5. I tried this with some TW2.8.x files and it
worked just fine. I was able to import the tiddlers from the TWC
document, save/download the results, and then open the local copy.

I think the clue to the problem is the error message: "can't find
    variable: FileReader".

FileReader is a standard HTML5 javascript object, defined by the
browser. However, if you are using an older browser that
pre-dates HTML5 support, that object won't exist, resulting in
    the error that was shown.

So.. the question is: what browser (and what version) was used to
    attempt the upgrade?

    enjoy,
