hmmm So if someone tells me, I should open the "xyz" tag with the "tessellation" background, you can be sure, I'd need to use browser search and type "xyz", because I don't know, how tessellation looks like. Also pixel backgrounds will hurt text readability in the tag pill. So basically everyone will have problems now, to read the text. Which may be kind of fair ;)
IMO use the built in tag symbols. It's part of the core, so it works out of the box. The symbols are svg, so they work well with every screen resolution. You can use symbols like (103), (007) ... What ever you want. IMO no new complexity needed. Use the existing stuff.
