There hasn't been any changes that would obviously impact the display of external PDFs. I can't duplicate the problem; PDFs displayed via _canonical_uri work fine in 5.1.10-prerelease in Firefox on my Mac. I wonder if it's worth preparing a minimal test case that you can post to TiddlySpot? It would be good to track down the issue in case it affects others.
