I believe you can use my plugin tobibeer/setvars
<http://tobibeer.github.io/tw5-plugins/#setvars> to properly store a list
item in a variable <http://tobibeer.github.io/tw5-plugins/#setvars-Syntax>,
e.g.
<$setvars _planet={{!!planet}} planet="planet[1]">
<$link to=<<planet>>><<planet>></$link>
</$setvars>
