When you open the left menu while the left menu tiddler
($:/plugins/tongerner/topleftmenu/leftmenu) is *open* in the story river,
you get the effect you describe ("double" menu).
So I was able to fix this by renaming the vanilla theme with an underscore

I do not know what you mean by "per Ton's instructions"; I do not overwrite
the default theme. Only for use of sticky behaviour of the edit toolbar,
you have to overwrite $:/themes/tiddlywiki/vanilla/sticky. May be that is
what you mean.

1) Use the latest version of the topleftmenu plugin (v0.1.10) *and* the
layout adjustment plugin (v0.3.19)
2) Note down the changes you made in the Layout adjustment (Control panel >
Appearance > Plugin tweaks, tab Layout.
3) Delete the overriden shadow tiddler
$:/plugins/tongerner/layout_adjustment/styles (Control panel > Info, tab
Basics. Overridden shadow tiddlers at the bottom; click the advanced search
button over there to display the overridden shadow tiddlers)
4) Reapply your changes in Layout adjustment
If that does not work, you need to give more information:
OS and browser
TW version
The code you use in the left menu
($:/plugins/tongerner/topleftmenu/leftmenu/entries)
