I think the appropriate solution will finally come to light. Here is
an alternate method with .unwrap(), which doesn't quite do what I
want, but doesn't crash either!
$.each(items, function(i, itm) {
$(itm).unwrap().appendTo("#ListTableColumn");
});
That gives something wrapped in <td>. Seems like one could .unwrap()
it again or .text() it... but that doesn't work.
