Not sure I follow. Did you tag that single tiddler with all that or did you 
create a tagging tree where...

   - Schooling
      - Actual Schooling
         - College
            - Carnegie Mellon University
               - CMU1
                  - CMU1-CAT
                     - Took at CMU1-CAT
                  
So, your eventual tiddler *CMU1 Staff GUI Design People* only has *Brad 
Meyers*, *Nicholas Spies*, *Took at CMU1-CAT*, as tags... or even put the 
names in a dedicated attendee / member field, so no tags at all.
