I'm using 1.6 codebase but there should be no major differences
from 1.5. What happens if you try to add those params to Xvnc
configure?

--with-default-font-path=catalogue:/etc/X11/fontpath.d,built-ins
--with-fontdir=/usr/share/X11/fonts
