This is correct. Our experience is that a fully automatic detection of the fontpath is impossible. Therefore, our setup GUI tries to provide a good default (which actually works in almost all cases), but ultimately this is a setting which must be configured. Our tool tries quite hard to retrieve a font path that works, though. For example, if all else fails, it actually starts a new "real" Xserver and then checks which fontpath it is using. This is of course a one time, installation procedure and not something that can be included in the vncserver script.

I'm surprised that setting the fontpath to "catalogue:/etc/X11/fontpath.d" doesn't work. Xvnc should be no different from other X servers in this area. What if you try "xinit -- -fp catalogue:/etc/X11/fontpath.d :47", can you start a real console Xserver with this fontpath, then?
