The usefulness suffers greatly for an one-for-all POI layer.  If you
are interested in pubs and half the pubs are not shown because gas
stations take all the room on the map (or vice versa) the result is
far from optimal.

This, of course, is a problem.  Maybe Openlayers needs to limit the
number of POIs is displays at a time.
