Ah, ok. No, I didn't know that. Most font problems I've seen have been people who haven't had DejaVu installed. Adding a good fallback font for the stuff not covered by dejavu sounds like a good idea. However it still leaves the problem of knowing if the font is installed, I see two possible solutions to this: One would be to write a check that looks in the same places as inkscape and batik and checks that all required fonts are there, however i think this might easily become quite the mess, especially when you add all kinds of different platforms.
