I'm not entirely happy how the config gets interpreted so differently
when switching modes.
the command-line option exists, and should be used in this case.
OTOH cascading clients should be strongly discouraged (well they are
somewhat by maximum open request count).

That will open up an entire new can of worms re file locking, when the
target directory is on a network share.
