My guess is that changing a time constant may be something like switching in a capacitor. That may cause some ringing that may last days to weeks.
I thought of that, but the offset seems (over 36+ hours) to be pretty consistent without any sign of wobbling around. I'll let things run for several more days before changing anything, though.
