Windows XP gets mighty confused by a TB connected to a serial port and installs the MS Ball-Point Mouse driver and tries to interpret the packet from the TB as mouse commands - just go into device manager and disable the MS Ball-Point Mouse!
The TB also confuses the heck out of Acronis bootable utilities - they also see it as a rodent. I now unplug the serial cable to the TB when I need to use these. Thought this information might help someone.
