A simple blinking LED is handy to alert you that there is a problem. I was probably assuming that you already had a PC setup to log stuff and that you would go look there if you wanted to know what the problem was. About 25 years ago, I worked on a system that used the hack of unary encoding small integers in a blinking LED. That was before small LCDs were inexpensive and readily available. It worked. Yes, it's not great. It (or something similar) might be useful today if you were trying to avoid adding a LCD. -- These are my opinions, not necessarily my employer's.
