About 15 years ago I was designing an upgrade to a system that used an odd IC. It was britih and was used for tone signalling. I used an unusual cmos process eith a negative supply. When we ordered them we were given a "one time buy" option. On enquiring it trasnspired that the foundry that grew the crystals closed down years before. Noone new the exact specification and they were down to the last few wafers! There was also an issue with the Plessey voltage references. They were excellent devices until the some change and the yealds dropped so low they stopped making them. I'm not sure but I think this was after shutdown of the SL6xx plant. Someone my have bought the line but failed to make them work.
