I can't afford LabView, so what are my options? Is there a preferable

Many people use the Prologix GPIB-USB adapter.

I've been very happy with mine.

That's just the hardware. It uses one of the popular USB-serial chips so you shouldn't have any problem getting a driver.

I have been very happy with the Prologix GPIB-USB adapter. I am using it with a HP5370B which has been set to "TALK" and I use Hyperterminal to capture data. You may google it - sometimes I have seen the adapter cheaper at electronics dealers.
