Oh Plugh!
Just to be perfectly clear, the cesium (caesium) atoms is neutral as
they pass through the A-magnet, microwave interigations, C-field and
B-magnet. It is only when they hit the masspectrometer wire that they
get ionized... and that current is was is measured as beam current.
If the the atoms was ionized from start, they would react much more
agressively to magnetic fields and would be easier to detect as well...
the whole physical package would be quite different.
Just look at mercury ion standards...
