Hi!
This reply was not properly sent it seems, as it seems to have ended up
in a /dev/null along the way. I've had a partial mail-outage (was
complete netloss, hooking in the backup ADSL line proved uhm...
challanging, weight in my fever).
Cheers,

Hi Magnus,
I was surprised to read that you had needed help to resolve the problem as,
not to over-inflate your ego, you seem to be very experienced and knowledgable.
Thanks for those nice words.
So don't tease us - what was it?
Well, regardless of accumulated experience in one or several nearby
field, when you are encountered with a Cesium beam for the first time
one has limited knowledge about the intricate details... so my focus was
sent in the wrong direction. It took the assistance of a friendly mind
with a much deeper insight to even come up with the possibility of the
DDS chip was failing, and his experience also gave me a very easy way to
debug the issue, by checking if the waveform output bits had stuck,
which is a problem that plauged these chips. That was enought to cause
additional harmonics and reduction in S/N to keep it out of propper
lock. Once I looked, it was dead-on with several of these bits stuck
low. Once I was given a replacement chip from an old board and hooked it
up the Ceasium beam locked up nicely and clean.
Let's just say that I learned alot from my attempts to debug the clock
as well as the guided tour of how things worked. So, it was one of those
experiences where you are reminded of how little you know and your ego
becomes much more humble.
Experiences like that help you to keep studying, learning more and seek
more experience. Thus, I think there is reasnoble amounts of hints to
keep my ego in place most of the time at least. Thanks for the concern. :)
I have more repairs to do in the lab, except for the constant need of
reorganisation, cleanup and setting the rig up.
Cheers,
Magnus
