The classic clear plastic package with a round dome actually makes a pretty
good lens.
Most/many LEDs are available in 2 or 3 beam widths. It's just a matter of
how far the LED is from the focal point. If you get 2 different ones and
look at them from the side the difference in position is obvious.
Of course, the wide ones aren't as bright.
LEDs encapsulated in a diffusing material have very wide viewing angles
but are dimmer for the same LED chip output power.
