Why bother, you can replace the entire box apart from the input signal conditioning with an FPGA and a pair of high resolution time interval interpolators (eg 2 ADCs per interpolator, or a TAC circuit like those used by Wavecrest.).

with 5370's. I would not be surprised if a PIC could do the task. . .
