You're not alone. I think static zap has killed my Thunderbolt iCruze
monitor. I was using it without installing the shell on the RS-232
connector and probably touched the wired pins. The display has the same
random pattern and does not change with connection to the RS-232.

This is not an endorsement but Dr. Martens makes the shoes that I wear.
Not something that most people would wear but I find that I keep them on
quite a bit at home during Winter. Keeps down the unwanted "shocks" as I
discharge. Also something to consider when working on high dollar
electronics.
