The SSM based synchronisation routing is not state of the art, but a fairly well understood and documented thing. The ITU-T G.781 is available for free download. The ETSI documents is also available for free.

SSM based synchronisation routing suffers from several deficiencies and essentially requires a management system to handle the error case and reconfigure the network.

The SSM processing essentially allows for the network nodes to act as the first line of defence in quick interaction and if properly configured will do it almost right most of the time. It's not bad, but not what we expect from networks these days.
