Since the goal of this BYMLBI (Back Yard Medium LBI) is to measure the change in the earth's rotation rate, one would at the least need a time code recorded on those tapes, since you want to know the instant when the source crosses some reference plane. It's not quite like a classic interferometer application where you're looking for high resolution in a small region, but don't need high absolute position accuracy.
