There are two mechanisms for splitting a pile of messages into threads. Some mail readers sort by the Subject field. Some use the In-Reply-To headers. Sorting by Subject is generally good enough. Using the In-Reply-To headers gets much better results when various branches of the thread overlap in time. It also does the right thing if messages arrive out of order. That is common if some replies go direct to people in addition to the list. -- These are my opinions.
