One quick approach is to let gpsd try.  It's very good at figuring out what 
sort of device you have.

I normally use gpsmon.  By default, it doesn't send anything, just listens 
while searching baud rates.  The "i" (initialize?) command tries the full 
gpsd search collection which sends various commands trying to get it to 
switch to the best mode.
