There are lightning arrestors designed specifically for outside GPS antennas. These arrestors go in the coax cable from antenna to receiver. Typical setup is to put a lightning rod near the antenna to take the main hit, to protect the antenna and arrestor most of the time, to save the expense of replacing antenna and arrestor every time.
