Hi At that time (and today) a 3801 is a “well over $300” sort of box at auction. The REF-0 box hovers between $25 and $40 depending on the direction the wind is blowing. Cost does matter …. What makes sense on a $800 gizmo probably does not make sense on a $80 stitch up project.
Yes you could debate the value of a 3801 vs it’s cost. The bottom line is still “that’s what they sell for”.
