The other non-standard part of the Z3801A is that it comes setup for RS422 
rather than RS232.  So I'd check with a scope during power up before doing 
anything more complicated.

There are jumpers inside so it's easy to switch to RS-232.  But it might work 
most of the time without that if you get the wiring right and are lucky, and 
any particular USB gismo might not be lucky enough.
