As a network engineer at a university I can tell you that you are just trading one set of unknowns for a different and possibly larger set. When you go from "n devices on the same switch" toward "other side of the state" the unknowns multiply. With that said, hopefully the ethernet connection will give you better numbers than the USB interfaces. Best of luck.
