Many thanks for the responses. The take-home message that I've got is that it may be OK to run the device with no heat sink but it's life might be extended by adding one. As it cost ~$300 it would be nice to get the maximum use from it.
I think what I shall do is to measure, or estimate, the temperature that the Rb box gets up to and then attach in some manner a heatsink. Measure again and see what difference the heatsink makes.
