Bob just stated a great truth that explains why and how we become time-nuts -- in order to characterize an oscillator, you need another oscillator that's (preferably 10x) better. Then you need one that's 10x better than *that*, and so on until you have a strontium optical lattice clock. And then you need three of those to cross-check each other. :-)
