David,

Thanks for the quick reply. Your web page is very informative. If I
understand correctly, you got the barewire version and made your own
DB-9 connector for it. Do you suppose that the DB-9 version (which
comes with a cigarette lighter adapter) is less precise/more
jittery/etc.?

Also, do you have the 1 Hz or 5 Hz version? I see that the 5-Hz
versions are at least twice as expensive as 1 Hz.

Yes, I had to make a small interface box (which could have been a connector strip) which had three sets of wires:

- the lead from the GPS

- the lead to the power supply

- the lead to the computer

If you can find an electronics or amateur radio enthusiast in your area (perhaps an Amateur Radio club?) they could do this for you for, say, 15$ US. In may case, the available power was 12V, so I had to include a small 12V to 5V regulator. It's just as easy (for a more modern computer than I was using) to tap off a USB connector for the 5V.

Only the bare wire version has the PPS capability, which is essential for microsecond rather than millisecond accuracy. I have the 1Hz version, which is what the ntp software expects.

Cheers,
David
