Why should an SMP processor help? Doesn't it complicate the timekeeping as there are two processor clocks to sync? OK, if you have a heavily loaded system, it should increase the available CPU power, but for accurate timekeeping you want to avoid a heavily loaded system! <G>

I do agree about FreeBSD being a good choice though.
